CROWD-FUNDING CAMPAIGN
February 5, 2015: the "Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnational and Transparty", "Hands Off Cain" and "No Peace Without Justice" have launched a crowd-funding campaign to convene the Second International Conference on the issue “Rule of Law vs Reason of State” to be held at the European Parliament in Brussels in March or April 2015.
The Conference will gather speakers and experts in the fields of human rights and international relations. They will analyze the legal tools and other international instruments available and those to be implemented in order to affirm and codify the universal “Human Right to Know” how and why governments make decisions at different levels affecting fundamental human rights and civil liberties, in the name of “national security.”
It is well known that, with regard to capital punishment, many countries – especially authoritarian ones, like China and Iran –, do not issue official statistics on capital punishment; therefore the number of executions may in fact be much higher than those estimated or made public.
However, also countries considered “democratic”, such as Japan and the United States itself, the system of capital punishment is in many aspects covered by a veil of secrecy. In particular, a string of “botched” lethal injection executions carried out in the USA in 2014 has increased State secrecy regarding lethal-injection drug protocols. Of the 32 states that still use lethal injection, at least 14 provide for a – de jure or de facto – State secret that prevent the public or inmates from knowing the source and efficacy of execution drugs.
