OSLO: IT STARTED TODAY THE 6TH WORLD CONGRESS AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY
June 21, 2016: It started today the 6th World Congress Against the Death Penalty in Oslo, Norway. The Italian Embassy organised a side event at the Domus Media of the University of Oslo, "Death penalty: An emerging jus cogens prohibition?â
The Opening Ceremony was today in the afternoon, at the Opera House, at the presence of Zeid Raâad Al Hussein, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and several ministries, amongst whom Børge Brende, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, and Benedetto Della Vedova, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Italy.
After RaphaĂŤl Chenuil-Hazan, Executive Director of ECPM, the ceremony was closed with the speech of Antonio Stango, Coordinator of the 6th World Congress Against the Death Penalty, and member of the Board of Hands Off Cain.
In his opening speech Zeid Al Hussein expressed his personal opposition to the death penalty, and his favour towards the rule of law, considering it the best answer to terrorism.
In a video sent to the Congress, Pope Francis said again that the death penalty must be abolished, as well as any other sentence that doesn't leave space for hope, otherwise it would be torture.
