UGANDA: MAN IN GULU SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MURDER

A 43-year-old man in Gulu, Uganda, has been sentenced to death for murder, URN reported on 22 August 2019.
John Bosco Ojok, a resident of Agago District was found guilty of murdering his nine-year-old niece Rebecca Akongo on 21 July 2017.
He has been on remand at Gulu Central Prison since 2017 when he was arrested.
Court heard that Ojok who had a misunderstanding with the deceased’s father Francis Akor aged 38, set ablaze the house killing Akong and injuring six others.
Akor told court that Ojok who is his elder brother had a misunderstanding over a piece of land.
Akor said as a result of the death of his daughter, his wife Ketty Atim developed mental illness, while other four children got deformities.
Patrick Omiya, the Gulu Resident State Attorney asked court give Ojok a death sentence for the murder he committed and life sentence for attempted murder for the six survivors.
Ojok, however, pleaded for a lenient sentence since he is suffering from pressure and diabetes.
He also adds that he has to take care of his 13 children and his wives who among them are a disabled.
In his judgment, Justice Mubiru sentenced him to death for the murder and life sentence for the other six counts of attempted murder.
