IRAN. EU, HUMAN RIGHTS COME BEFORE THE NUCLEAR AGREEMENT
February 4, 2020: PRESS CONFERENCE
From 3 February, the High Representative for EU Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, will be in Tehran for meetings with President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, while the numbers of the identified deaths during the repression of anti-regime demonstrations exploded in mid-November continue to rise (reaching over 840), a protest that has so far resulted in at least 1,500 deaths, 4,000 injured and 12,000 arrests.
It is increasingly urgent that European policy be marked by respect for human rights, as the only guarantee of peace and security, instead of compliance with the Iranian theocratic regime in the name of the nuclear deal, which entered into crisis after the withdrawal of the Usa, and the steps back recently taken also from Germany, France and England. During the press conference, an appeal will be launched for the release of arrested protesters and for the establishment of an independent international commission of inquiry into the carnage in progress since mid-November 2019.
Wednesday 5 February, 2020 from 11.30 to 12.30 at the press room of the Chamber of Deputies (via della Missione 8) in Rome
