NIGERIA: MAN GETS DEATH SENTENCE FOR STEALING TWO PHONES, WRISTWATCHES
March 19, 2020: A Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja on 18 March 2020 sentenced one Muritala Salami to death for armed robbery. Justice Adenike Coker found Salami guilty of a two-count charge of conspiracy and robbery. The prosecuting counsel Jide Martins, a director with the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in Lagos State justice ministry said Salami and his gang conspired and robbed one Okocha Anthony Afiam of two phones and two wristwatches. Justice Coker said the armed robbery gang leader was convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery contrary to section 299 of criminal law and Armed Robbery contrary to section 297 (a) of the Criminal law. Lagos State justice ministry’s spokesman Kayode Oyekanmi in a statement said the convict in April 2016 led a four-man gang to a robbery operation before his arrest.
