TURKEY EXTRADITES OFFICER BEHIND LEAKED MILITARY SECRETS TO ALGERIA
August 5, 2020: Turkey extradited a fugitive military officer who was allegedly behind a high-profile leak in the Algerian army, reports said on 4 August 2020. The officer, identified as Guermit Bounouira, had fled to Turkey after divulging classified information about the Algerian military and the death of former Algerian army Chief of Staff Gen. Ahmed Gaid Salah in December 2019, Turkish media outlets reported, citing Algerian counterparts. Bounouira was the aide-de-camp of Salah, who became the country's de facto leader after ousted President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned in April 2019. He is accused of leaking military secrets to foreign activists and selling classified information, which risks the death penalty, according to Algerian law. Turkey handed Bounouira to Algeria on 30 July after Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune called President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄan to secure his extradition last month.
