DEATH PENALTY. HANDS OFF CAIN WELCOMES THE APPROVAL BY THE UNGA OF A RESOLUTION FOR A UNIVERSAL MORATORIUM
December 16, 2020: Hands Off Cain, the association which has promoted since 1993 and brought to success in 2007 the campaign for the approval by the United Nations General Assembly of a resolution for a universal moratorium on capital punishment, welcomes the approval of eighth resolution of the United Nations General Assembly. The Moratorium Resolution has just been adopted by the UNGA with 123 votes in favor, 38 votes against, 24 abstentions - 8 were absent. Attached the results country by country (on the machine vote). As a reminder, 2018 Resolution received 121 votes in favor, 35 votes against, 32 abstentions - 5 were absent. Rita Bernardini, Sergio D'Elia and Elisabetta Zamparutti, respectively President, Secretary and Treasurer of Hands Off Cain, declared: "The pragmatic way of the moratorium on capital executions is confirmed as the main road to lead the international community to the complete abolition of the death penalty. The increase in the number of votes in favor recorded this year compared to 2018 proves even more that the death penalty is an old iron of the history, an intolerable anachronism that humanity must free itself from."
