BANGLADESH: 5 SENTENCED TO DEATH IN MANIKGANJ FOR KILLING UP MEMBER
January 20, 2021: A Manikganj court on 18 January 2021 sentenced five people to death and acquitted thirteen others in a case filed over the murder of union parishad member Ashraf Ali in Ghior upazila of Manikganj in 2013. Judge Shahana Haque Siddiqua delivered the verdict in the presence of the condemned convicts. The five convicts are Manjur Rahman, 17, Moazzem Hossain, 35, Md Babul Miah, 34, Azizul Haque, 22, and Feli Begum, 18. Meanwhile, 13 accused were acquitted from the charges. Prosecutor Niranjan Bosak said the accused attacked Asharaf Ali with lethal weapons on 18 June 2013, in Fulhara village under Ghior upazila in connection with a land dispute. The next day, Ali died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. The victim's brother Monsur Ali lodged the case with Ghior Police Station on 20 June accusing 25 people of involvement in the crime.
