BANGLADESH: HC CONFIRMS DEATH SENTENCES OF 8 CONVICTS IN 2 MURDER CASES
February 2, 2021: The High Court have recently confirmed the death penalty of eight convicts in Bangladesh in two separate murder cases in Keraniganj of Dhaka and Faridpur, The Daily Star reported on 1st February 2021. Of the two cases, the HC confirmed on 31 January the death penalty of four convicts in a case filed for killing a couple and their two children in Keraniganj in September 2014. The convicts are: Suman Dhali alias Daku Suman, Zakaria Hussain alias Jony, Suman alias CNG Suman and Nasir Uddin. The HC bench of Justice Shahidul Karim and Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman came up with the verdict after hearing the death reference (lower court documents) and the appeals filed by the convicts challenging the trail court judgment in the case, Deputy Attorney General Bashir Ahmed told The Daily Star. Saju, 35, his wife Ronji, 27, their seven-year-old son Imran and two-year-old daughter Sanjida were found dead at a house in South Keraniganj area, on the outskirts of Dhaka, on 24 September 2014. Bashiruddin, Saju's brother, filed the case the following day. On 26 November 2015, a Dhaka court sentenced Suman Dhali alias Daku Suman, 28, Zakaria Hussain alias Jony, 28, Suman alias CNG Suman, 32, and Nasir Uddin, 28, to death for the killing. The court acquitted Afsana Akhtar, wife of Daku Suman, as allegation against her was not proved. The same HC bench on 28 January confirmed death sentences of four other convicts in another case filed for raping and murdering a teenage girl in Faridpur in December 2012, DAG Bashir Ahmed told The Daily Star.
