IRAN - Saleh Mirhashemi, Majid Kazemi and Saeed Yaghoubi executed in Isfahan on 19 May

(May 19, 2023) - Saleh Mirhashemi, Majid Kazemi and Saeed Yaghoubi executed in Isfahan on 19 May.
Accused of a 'political' crime
Mizan, the judiciary news agency, reported the executions of Saleh Mirhashemi, Majid Kazemi and Saeed Yaghoubi in Isfahan Central Prison on the morning of Friday, May 19, 2023.
Three defendants in the “Khaneh e Isfahan” case were executed today, May 19, 2023, for charges of enmity against God (Moharebeh), as reported by Mizan, the judiciary’s news agency.
Despite numerous errors and defects in the legal case, Branch 9 of the Iranian Supreme Court recently upheld their death sentences. The execution took place at Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan, disregarding both domestic and international calls to halt the executions. Yesterday, the families of the defendants were allowed brief visitations.
The death sentence was issued by Judge Morteza Barati, who has been involved in several human rights violations cases.
Saleh Mir Hashemi (36), the primary defendant, was sentenced to death for “Moharebeh through using a Colt gun,” “forming and running groups to act against national security,” and “assembly and collusion against national security.” He also received ten years for “membership and collaboration with Monafeghin.”
Majid Kazemi (30) and Saeed Yaghoubi (37) were sentenced to death for “Moharebeh through using warm weapons” and ten years in prison for “forming and running groups to act against national security” and “assembly and collusion against national security.”
Mizan news agency introduced them as “the perpetrators of shooting with Colts and Kalashnikovs and the killing of three members of the security forces with the intention of subversion who had direct contact with the People’s Mojahedin.”
While all the news and statements indicate that these three detainees were innocent, and all their confessions obtained under torture.
The men were forced to make self-incriminating confessions, following beatings, electric shocks, and mock executions, as well as threats to execute and harass their family members and rape the defendants themselves, according to Amnesty.
"I swear to God I am innocent. I didn't have any weapons on me. They [security forces] kept beating me and ordering me to say this weapon is mine. ... I told them I would say whatever they wanted, just please leave my family alone. I did whatever they wanted because of the torture," the human rights monitor transcribed an audio message from Kazemi inside prison.
On May 17, 2023, the families of the three political prisoners called on the people of Isfahan to support them and join them in preventing the execution by protesting in front of Dastgerd prison.
This call received a positive response from the people. People in Ekbatan and Bagheri towns of Tehran protested against the execution of these three political prisoners with slogans of death to the dictator and death to the executioner’s republic. A group of people from Isfahan also went in front of Dastgerd prison in Isfahan in the last hours of Wednesday evening and joined the families of the prisoners.
After this public support, the judicial system officially announced in Mizan News Agency that they will not execute next day.
