USA - Missouri. Johnny Johnson, 45, White, was executed
August 1, 2023: (August 1, 2023) - Johnny Johnson, 45, White, was executed. Johnson received a lethal injection dose of pentobarbital at a state prison in Bonne Terre and was pronounced dead at 6:33 p.m. CDT, authorities said. He was convicted (see HoC March 7, 2005) of the July 2002 killing of 6-year-old Casey Williamson after she resisted his attempt to sexually attack her. Johnson, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 16, expressed remorse in a brief handwritten statement released by the Department of Corrections hours before the execution. The U.S. Supreme Court, with Justice Sonia Sotomayor and two other justices dissenting, rejected a late request to stay the execution. At Johnson’s trial, defense lawyers presented testimony showing their client — an ex-convict who had been released from a state psychiatric facility 6 months before the crime — had stopped taking his schizophrenia medication and was acting strangely in the days before the slaying. Ernie Williamson, the father of the girl, did not want Johnson to be executed, according to a clemency application sent Thursday to Missouri Gov. Mike Parson. Ernie Williamson said executing Johnny Johnson will not bring closure “because it won’t bring Casey back,” according to the clemency application. Johnson becomes the 4th person executed in Missouri this year, the 97th since Missouri resumed executions in 1989, the 16th inmate to be executed this year in the United States, and the 1,574th overall since the nation he resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
