PAKISTAN: 4 SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING BANK GUARDS IN NAROWAL
October 11, 2023: Pronouncing verdict in the case of killings of two security guards of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) in Narowal, Additional District and Sessions Judge Tariq Anjum on October 10, 2023 ordered that four convicts in the case be twice hanged to death. The guards on Aug 16, 2022 were transferring cash to a van from the main branch of the National Bank in Narowal when four gunmen snatched the money. When guards resisted, the robbers shot and injured guards Muhammad Shahbaz and Mahmood Khan. Both guards later succumbed to their injuries at the Narowal District Headquarters Hospital. During the incident, one of the bandits was also injured. The robbers fled after looting Rs9 million from the van. The city police arrested the gang in Gujranwala within three hours of the incident and recovered the stolen money from Sabatin Raza, Rashid Ali, Asim Raza and Hasan Raza. In addition to the death sentences, the court also ordered the convicts to pay Rs700,000 in compensation to the victims’ families. The convicts were also sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs100,000 for the crime of robbery. An additional six months of imprisonment will be imposed if the compensation is not paid to the heirs. The judge also handed down life terms on three counts to other bandits - Asim and Hasan - along with a fine of Rs800,000. A six-month imprisonment will be added in case of non-payment of the fine.
