Iran's official IRNA news agency says an alleged agent of the Israeli intelligence service Mossad was executed in a Zahedan jail on December 16, without naming the individual or detailing the allegations.
The execution coincided with a recent attack by Sunni militants on a police station in the same region.
IRNA claimed that "this person communicated with foreign services, including Mossad, collecting classified information, and with participation with associates, provided documents to foreign services, including the Mossad." Iranian officials frequently accuse outside powers of interfering in Iranian affairs, and judicial processes in Iran are often untransparent. A day earlier, police in Sistan-Baluchistan said 11 officers were killed in a "terrorist" attack on a police station. Actually the attack resulted in the death of 12 security personnel, with several others sustaining injuries. A state funeral for the victims unfolded in the town of Rask on Saturday, as reported by state television. Additionally, clashes following the attack led to the reported deaths of two militants affiliated with the Jaish al-Adl group.
