EGYPT: MB LEADERS BADIE, EL BELTAGY SENTENCED TO DEATH IN ‘PLATFORM INCIDENTS’ CASE

An Egyptian court sentenced on March 4, 2024, Muslim Brotherhood leaders Mohamed Badie, Mohamed El-Beltagy, and 6 others to death in Case No. 72 of 2021, also known as the “Platform Incidents” case.
The court also ruled life imprisonment for 37 defendants, imprisonment of 15 years for 6 defendants, and imprisonment of 10 years for 7 defendants. Other 21 defendants were acquitted.
Those sentenced to death are: ‘Muhamad Badie, Mahmoud Ezzat, Muhamad al-Beltagy, Amr Zaki, Osama Yassin, Safwat Hegazy, Essam Abdel Majed, and Muhamad Abdel Maqsoud.’
The Public Prosecution’s decision to refer the defendants to court came after accusing them for committing several crimes, namely joining a group established in violation of the provisions of the law, participated in the crimes of crowding, violence, and murder, along with attempts to kill policemen on al Nasr Road, and preparing firearms for this purpose.
During previous sessions, Egypt’s Public Prosecution Office presented an official report from the Public Transport Authority regarding the damages reported at the locations where violence acts took place including, stations on Al-Nasr Street.
Article 12 of the Anti-Terrorism Law defines the penalty for establishing or managing a terrorist group, and when does this crime reach the death penalty, and stipulates that “Whoever establishes, organizes, or manages a terrorist group, or assumes leadership in it, shall be punished with death or life imprisonment.”
