May 26, 2024: May 26, 2024 - IRAN. Samir Saeedi Rad executed in Qom on May 26 Iranian authorities executed another Kurdish inmate on Sunday morning in Qom Central Prison. Samir Saeedi Rad, 35, who was originally from Arak, had been sentenced to death for alleged drug trafficking, Hengaw Organization for Human Rights said today.
The individual was arrested 3 years ago for transporting six kilograms of heroin and was subsequently sentenced to death by the Qom Revolutionary Court.
A source close to Saeedi Rad's family confirmed the execution, noting that the family was notified after the fact. "We received the news this morning, and it has left us devastated," the source said.
State media have not reported on Saeedi Rad's execution, reflecting a pattern of non-disclosure for executions of ethnic minorities and political prisoners.
Human rights groups have long accused Tehran of disproportionately targeting Kurds with harsh sentences, including the death penalty, as part of a broader campaign to suppress dissent.
Despite international outcry, Iran continues to lead the world in per capita executions, with drug-related offenses constituting a significant portion of death sentences. The Iranian government maintains that its strict anti-drug policies are “essential” for national security and public health.
