SOMALIA: AL-SHABAAB EXECUTES 5 MEN FOR ALLEGEDLY SPYING FOR U.S., SOMALIA AND KENYA
July 16, 2024: The militant group Al-Shabaab on July 13, 2024 executed five men accused of spying for the U.S., Kenya, and the Somali government.
The group’s radio broadcasted the execution, which took place in a public square in Jamame district, located in the Lower Jubba region of southern Somalia.
Jamame is known as one of Al-Shabaab’s strongholds.
Early on July 13, residents were summoned to witness the execution as the judge from Al-Shabaab’s Jubba Islamic District Court publicly read out the names of the five men and their alleged "spying crimes.”
Among the executed were three Somali nationals detained by the group: Ali Hassan Osman, 43; Osman Abdirahman Omar, 44; and Farhan Omar Sheikh Warsame, 24.
Additionally, two others, Mohammed Kimamni Jiramaya Yusuf Roogow, 32, and Mohammed Hassan Mohamed (a foreigner), 26, who had reportedly lived with Al-Shabaab for years, were accused of spying for the Kenyan intelligence service.
Al-Shabaab frequently arrests civilians and carries out executions for alleged spying, adultery, and other accusations.
The group’s judicial proceedings are not open to the public, and independent verification of its allegations is challenging, as journalists and lawyers are not permitted to attend.
Al-Shabaab’s leadership has grown increasingly suspicious of its foreign fighters, particularly those from East Africa, due to targeted airstrikes that have killed several top commanders of the group. (Source: HORN OBSERVER, 15/07/2024)
