December 6, 2024: December 6, 2024 - IRAN. Report on situation of political prisoner Shiva Esmaili Shiva Esmaili, a 60-year-old political prisoner residing in Tehran, is currently serving a 10-year enforceable prison sentence in Evin Prison. According to information obtained by Hengaw, Ms. Esmaili was sentenced on May 14, 2023, by Branch 26 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari. She was convicted on charges of “repeated crimes of assembly and collusion to act against national security” and initially sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment. However, under sentence aggregation laws, the maximum enforceable sentence is 10 years. Hengaw’s sources have also confirmed that Ms. Esmaili’s two sons, Seyyed Mehdi Vafaee Sani and Seyyed Alireza Vafaee Sani, are currently imprisoned in Ward 8 of Evin Prison. Mehdi is serving a 6-year sentence, while Alireza is serving a 5-year term. Additionally, Seyyed Mohammad Javad Vafaee Sani, a political prisoner detained in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad and a cousin of Ms. Esmaili’s sons, has been sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Mashhad. Ms. Esmaili, a mother of three, was arrested by security forces in November 2020 and subsequently transferred to Evin Prison. It is worth noting that prison authorities have repeatedly denied Ms. Esmaili the right to family visits and telephone contact with her sons and other family members under various pretexts.
