BANGLADESH: SIX SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING TRADER AFTER ABDUCTION IN SIRAJGANJ
May 26, 2025: A Sirajganj court on March 20, 2025 sentenced six men to death for abducting and murdering vegetable trader Nazmul Islam in 2017. Each convict was also fined Tk10,000, with an additional month of jail time if unpaid. The verdict was delivered in absentia by Judge M Ali Ahmed on March 20, as all six remain fugitives. Those convicted are Khaja Mia, Md Enamul, Mojahid, Bosu, Saidul Islam, and Milon Sarkar — all from Gaibandha district. A seventh accused, Md Saiful Islam, died during trial and was acquitted posthumously. Nazmul, a trader from Naogaon, went missing after leaving for Dhaka with vegetables on August 10, 2017. That night, his family received ransom calls demanding Tk50,000. The next day, his body was found near a hotel in Sirajganj, showing signs of head injuries. Police believe the killers dumped the body after failing to collect the ransom. Nazmul’s father later filed a case. (Source: dhakatribune, 20/05/2025)
