Bailey was back in a Bay County courtroom this morning for resentencing in the 2005 murder of Panama City Beach Police Sergeant Kevin Scott Kight. The judge’s decision issued a final verdict yesterday.
“Is there anything you wish to say prior to being sentenced?” Bay County Judge Shonna Young Gay said.
“No, ma’am,” Bailey said.
Those were the only words 42-year-old Robert Bailey said Thursday morning as Judge Shonna Young Gay prepared to resentence him.
Bailey shot and killed Panama City Beach Police Sergeant Kevin Kight on March 27th Easter Sunday 2005.
Kight pulled over Bailey’s vehicle on Front Beach Road for a traffic infraction, not knowing bailey was violating parole back home in Wisconsin. Bailey shot and killed Kight to avoid arrest.
Jurors convicted bailey during his original trial in February 2007 and voted 11-1 to sentence him to death.
In 2017, the U.S. Supreme Court declared Florida’s death penalty law unconstitutional, giving many death row inmates a new sentencing.
During the new penalty phase last fall, the jury recommended the death penalty again. Thursday, Judge Gay pronounced the sentence.
Bailey returns to the Florida state prison in Raiford, where he’ll await death by lethal injection. On his case see also HoC 11/04/2007, 06/07/2017, 25/10/2024.
