The Court of First Instance in charge of terrorism cases at the Court of Appeals in Rabat on October 13, 2023 sentenced a man to the death penalty for his involvement in the murder of a policeman.
Two other accomplices involved in the murder received life imprisonment sentences, while eight others received a five-year prison sentence.
One of the defendants was also sentenced to four years in prison.
The defendants were facing charges including forming a criminal gang to plan and commit terrorist acts aimed at seriously disturbing public order. Other charges include premeditated assault on a person’s life, and possession of firearms, and ammunition.
The murder case dates back to March, when police opened an investigation into the policeman's killing.
Preliminary investigation showed that the police officer disappeared after the end of his shift on March 1, leaving behind his portable camera and his glasses, which were found with traces of blood.
The investigation led to the discovery of the body of the deceased burned inside a sewer in Lkhadra, a village in the district of Errahma in Casablanca.
Thirteen days following the murder, Moroccan police announced the arrest of three ISIS-affiliated suspects for their involvement in the heinous murder of the policeman.
Preliminary data from the investigation showed that the suspects declared allegiance to the emir of an ISIS terrorist cell and were plotting a series of terror projects to undermine Morocco’s security.
The plots aimed at targeting security employees, including the policeman who was murdered.
