CUBA. DISSIDENTS ASK FOR AMNESTY FOR POLITICAL PRISONERS, MORATORIUM ON EXECUTIONS
June 19, 2006: dissident groups in Cuba asked Havana to grant a general amnesty to political prisoners and to introduce a legal moratorium on capital executions.
âCuba has a poor record when it comes to the respect of human rightsâ, stated the Progressive Arc in Havana.
The declaration coincided with the first session in Geneva of the new UN Human Rights Council, of which Cuba is part.
Cubaâs presence was contested by Cubaâs dissidents and by various international human rights organizations. (Sources: Afp, Ansa, 19/06/2006)
