IRAQ. SAVING SADDAM FROM EXECUTION IS OPPORTUNITY FOR ITALY FOLLOWING DECISION TO WITHDRAW TROOPS, ROSE IN THE FIST
June 27, 2006: “What is the Italian government’s intention regarding the offer made by Marco Pannella for a special appointment to save Saddam from execution, and with Saddam’s life, the life of the rights and the civility which he massacred during 50 years of bloody rule?”
The question was put to Foreign Minister Massimo D’Alema by Rose in the Fist parliamentarians Sergio D’Elia and Giacomo Mancini.
“The question remains to be answered,” D’Elia and Mancini stated.
“We are waiting for the government to express itself regarding Pannella’s proposal or with other initiatives on the fate of the Iraqi dictator. Following the decision to withdraw from Iraq and, at the same time, to engage in the country’s security and its economic, civil and democratic reconstruction, an Italian initiative against the death penalty for Saddam would constitute a concrete and symbolic act of strong political significance.
Moreover, we are seeing an increase in cross party support for the ‘Hands Off Saddam’ appeal launched by Hands Off Cain”. (Sources: HOC, 27/06/2006)
