DEATH PENALTY. D'ALEMA GIVES FULL SUPPORT TO BATTLE FOR MORATORIUM

April 8, 2007: the Italian deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary, Massimo D'Alema, gave his "full support" for the march in Rome today for the moratorium on the death penalty.
D'Alema, who is currently in Libya, issued a statement through the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He gave march organisers his "full support and deep appreciation for a battle that is lead by the Italian Government, and whose value is confirmed by the presence of the top ranking representatives of the Italian Government."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the Italian Government's "continuing determination to pursue a strategy that involves requesting the European Union to formally include the moratorium in the agenda of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs on April 23rd. The Italian Government has shown an incredible desire to expand the consensus on the 'Declaration of Association' for the moratorium to the largest number of countries." (Sources: Apcom, 08/04/2007)
