UGANDA. SOLDIER SENTENCED TO DEATH OVER MURDER
February 10, 2008: the court martial sitting at the Community Centre in Mubende district in Uganda sentenced a Uganda Peoples Defence Forces soldier to death for murdering three civilians.
The prosecution said on December 27, 2007, Private Bosco Ayela, 38, shot dead his wife Sylvia Nanyonga, his six year old daughter Irene Atim and another man only identified as Lakyo, 50, at Kitoma in Bageza sub-county, Mubende district. Ayela was arrested at Mugungulu in Bageza sub-county, two days after committing the offence. Ayela said he had not intended to kill the trio.
Of his mother-in-law, Sylvia Nankabirwa, he said "she abused me and undressed before me. This angered me." Brig. Geoffrey Tabani, the chairman of the court, said Ayela could appeal in High Court if he was not content with the ruling. (Sources: AllAfrica.org, 11/02/2008)
