BANGLADESH. MAN AWARDED DEATH SENTENCE FOR KILLING WIFE FOR DOWRY
February 11, 2008: a 35 year old man was awarded the death sentence for killing his wife for dowry in 2004 in Sathkhira, Bangladesh.
The Women and Children Repression (Prevention) Tribunal judge Motazidur Rahman handed down the verdict to Azgar Ali of Brojabok village, in Kalaroa upazila. His mother Sakhina Begum was acquitted as the charge against her could not be proven. According to the prosecution, Azgar demanded a dowry of Tk 20,000 from the parents of his wife Rebeka Khatun. Rebeka failed to bring the money from her poor father. This angered him and he strangled Rebeka on December 26, 2004. (Sources: United News of Bangladesh, 11/02/2008)
