UZBEK PARLIAMENT CONSIDERS INTL PROTOCOL ON DEATH ABOLISHMENT
October 30, 2008: MPs in the Legislative Chamber (lower house) of the Oliy Majlis (parliament) in Uzbekistan approved a draft law "On accession of Uzbekistan to the Second Facultative Protocol of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, aiming at the abolishment of death penalty (New York, 15 December 1989)". The protocol says that "no one within the jurisdiction of a State Party to the present Protocol shall be executed and each State Party shall take all necessary measures to abolish the death penalty within its jurisdiction."
Accession of the protocol is a logical continuation of the decision of the government in Uzbekistan to abolish capital punishment from January 1, 2008.
The document will be sent to the Senate for approval. (Sources: UzReport.com, 03/11/2008)
