UNITED KINGDOM: RADICALS- REFUGEE STATUS OF IRANIAN LESBIAN RECOGNISED
February 12, 2009: English authorities recognised the political refugee status of Iranian lesbian Pegah Emambakhsh, the Radical Association Certi Diritti said.
"Today we received news from the London based Iranian Queer Railroad that the political refugee status of Iranian lesbian Pegah Emambakhsh was definitively recognised by the English authorities. This was due to the risk of capital punishment if she was forcibly repatriated to Iran. In the Islamic Republic, homosexuals are punished with the death penalty," Sergio Rovasio, secretary of the Radical Association Certi Diritti said.
"For Pegah, last Autumn thousands of people and dozens of associations that fight for human rights mobilised all over Europe. This was led by the Radical Association Certi Diritti, together with Pd Radical Parliamentarians, the EveryOne Group and the commitment of the European Parliament from Radical deputies Marco Cappato and Marco Pannella. All the institutions went into action to save the life of Pegah". (Sources: Radicali.it, 12/02/2009)
