TANZANIA: 75 DEATH SENTENCES COMMUTED: KIKWETE
November 19, 2009: Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete said at a conference in Rome he had commuted 75 death sentences to life imprisonment âjust few days ago.â
He explained that many Tanzanians support the death penalty. However, âthe death penalty was only being used as a toothless dog. More than 200 people were on the death row but none had been executed.â âThe law is there but for a long time it has not been applied," said Kikwete. (Sources: The Citizen, 19/11/2009)
