IRAN: FIVE DRUG TRAFFICKERS HANGED
April 8, 2010: Five people were hanged in Mashad (northeastern Iran) according to the reports.
According to the state run Iranian news agency ISNA, they were hanged in the prison of Mashad early morning. None of the five were identified by their names and they were all convicted of drug trafficking according to the report.
Iran Human Rights can not verify the charges mentioned in the report.
Tehran says the death penalty is essential to maintain public security and applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings. Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery are all punishable by death in Iran. (Sources: Iran Human Rights, 10/04/2010)
