KUWAIT: PARDON FOR DEATH ROW INMATES

January 27, 2012: The family of ‘Mohidul’, a Bangladeshi expatriate in Kuwait who was murdered by three fellow Bangladeshi émigrés, has agreed to pardon the convicts in exchange for Tk 2.1 million.
The families of the deceased and the accused reached an agreement at a meeting in the office of Manikganj’s Singair Upazila Nirbahee Officer (UNO), additional deputy commissioner of Munshiganj Golam Sarwar told bdnews24.com.
The move is likely to stop the Kuwait court, which had sentenced the trio to death, with a rider that they would be spared only if the victim’s family pardoned them.
The three convicts are Iqbal Dhali, 25, from Srinagar of Munshiganj; his brother Hridoy Dhali, 23; and  Ramjan from Homna in Comilla. Mohidul, 45, son of Taher Ali from Singair, was murdered in Kuwait last year. His wife Anwara Begum had filed a case in Kuwait-a lower court passed death sentence on the three, and High Court upheld the verdict.
As part of their efforts for amnesty, the trio’s families met Mohidul’s daughter and siblings at Singair UNO’s office.
Besides Munshiganj additional deputy commissioner Golam Sarwar, Manikganj additional deputy commissioner Nizamuddin was also present at the meeting. Sarwar said the Bangladesh government is trying to save the trio. “The process is underway and we hope to succeed with help from everyone,” he said.
Nurul Islam, an uncle of the Dhali brothers, told bdnews24.com that Mohidul’s family would sign the papers for amnesty on January 30.
“Before that, we will have to deposit the money to an account jointly opened by the Singair UNO and the upazila chairman,” he added. Sarwar said the papers would be sent to the Kuwaiti court concerned. (Sources: kuwaittimes.net, 28/01/2012)
