SINGAPORE: 34 ON DEATH ROW CAN REVIEW CASES UNDER LAW CHANGES
October 15, 2012: All 34 people now on death row in Singapore will get a chance to have their cases reviewed under proposed changes to laws mandating the death penalty for murder and drug trafficking. These changes were set out in the Misuse of Drugs (Amendment) Bill, Penal Code (Amendment) Bill and Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) Bill, read in Parliament for the first time on October 15.
They include lifting the mandatory death penalty for drug trafficking and murder in certain specific instances.
The Bills will also provide for those already sentenced to hang to apply for re-sentencing. (Sources: straitstimes.com, 15/10/2012)
