INDIA: RAPIST AWARDED DEATH PENALTY
February 24, 2013: In India, a 21-year-old man, who had raped and killed a three and a half-year-old girl on February 24, 2011 at a place called Yadahalli in Mysore Taluk, was awarded death sentence by the sessions judge N Rudramani.
The rapist Nanjappa had lured the child Ranjita when she was returning home from kindergarten. He bit her body at several places and bludgeoned her to death when he could not elicit any sexual pleasure out of her.
âThis was one of the rarest of rare cases as it involved animal like behaviour by the rapist Nanjappa. The case was fit for awarding death penalty,â observed the judge. He delivered this land mark judgment at the closing hours of Saturday (February 24).
The sentence also has two other components, a 7-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of `10,000, failing to which, the convict will have to undergo one more year of rigorous imprisonment. The judgment, which ran into 62 pages, also awarded `1 lakh from the Karnataka Government Victim Compensation Fund to the parents of the victim.
âNanjappa was a person of severe perversity. He is known to be having inter species sexual intercourse when he could not afford commercial sex workers. He deserve to die, if not he would prove to be a menace to the civilized society.â
Public prosecutor HE Chinappa, who had argued for death sentence, said the fiend had tormented the child by slashing her with a blade, before smothering and bludgeoning her to death. He thanked the judge for awarding death penalty. (Sources: dnaindia.com, 25/02/2013)
