FLORIDA (USA): ELMER CARROLL EXECUTED
May 29, 2013: Elmer Carroll, 56, White, was executed in Florida for the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl.
Carroll had been convicted of 1st-degree murder and sexual battery in the October 30, 1990 rape and strangling death of Christine McGowan. The girl lived with her family next door to a halfway house for homeless men where Carroll was staying. During Carroll's 2 decades on death row, his lawyers argued he was too mentally ill to stand trial or be subjected to the death penalty.
Carroll previously had been imprisoned twice for indecent assault on a child.
Carroll becomes the 2nd inmate to be put to death this year in Florida and the 76th overall since the state resumed capital punishment in 1979. Carroll becomes the 13th inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1333rd overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
