GAZA: COURT ISSUES DEATH SENTENCE FOR MURDER SUSPECT
July 14, 2013: A court in the Gaza Strip sentenced a man to death for killing two people, Gaza's public prosecutor said.
The unidentified man was recently arrested for the murder of a man, and during his trial it emerged that he had sexually assaulted and killed a relative ten years earlier, public prosecutor Ismail Jaber said.
In June, Jaber promised to implement death sentences against the perpetrators of high-profile homicides in the Gaza Strip.
Gaza courts have handed out over 30 death sentences since 2007, many of them to people convicted of helping Israeli security forces.
All execution orders must be approved by the president before they can be carried out, but Hamas no longer recognizes the legitimacy of incumbent Mahmoud Abbas, whose four-year term ended in 2009. (Sources: Ma'an, 14/07/2013)
