UAE: ON DEATH ROW, NEPALI MAN GETS CLEMENCY
December 14, 2013: A Nepali migrant worker, who was sentenced to death by a court in the United Arab Emirates on murder conviction, is returning home after he was awarded clemency.
Durga Bahadur Sunar, 30, of Chhitre VDC-4 in Parbat, was convicted for murdering a fellow Nepali, Ganesh Bahadur Basnet of Sunsari.
Sunar, who was serving jail time for the past eight years, was freed after the court received the letter of pardon sent by Basnetâs family.
âWe have learnt that Sunar is currently at Deportation Centre waiting for his return to Nepal,â Nepali Ambassador to the UAE Dhananjay Jha said.
Earlier, an agreement was reached between both families to request for pardon.
In 2010, a court in the UAE had announced death penalty for Sunar.
According to Jha, the court has said that process of pardon can go ahead only after the convict provides Rs 5.4 million âblood moneyâ to the victimâs family. (Sources: ekantipur.com14/12/2013)
