INDONESIA: DEATH SENTENCE GRANTED TO TWO IRANIAN METH SMUGGLERS

January 7, 2015: The district court in Sukabumi, West Java, has given death sentence to two Iranian citizens after they were proven guilty of smuggling 40 kilograms of the illegal drug methamphetamine into the country.
"As the sentence is harsher than our demand, we, as the prosecutors from the Cibadak districts prosecutors office, would think whether or not we would appeal against it," prosecutor Rio Situmeang informed ANTARA after the session.
Chief Judge Tafsir Sembiring announced that the two Iranian nationals identified as Seyed Hashem Mosavipour bin Sayed Abdollah (36) and Moradalivand bin Moradali (32) were proven guilty of violating the law on narcotics.
The judges granted both of them a death sentence, which was higher than the prosecutors demand for 15 and 20 years imprisonment.
"Perhaps, the judges have their own considerations to arrive at the decision to impose the death sentence," Situmeang noted.
The case came to light after the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) personnel caught the two defendants burying the meth in the Tangkuban Perahu Nature Reserve in Panyawelang hamlet, Jayanti village, Pelabuhanratu sub-district, Sukabumi, West Java. (Sources: ANTARA News, 07/01/2015)
