IRAQ: PRESIDENT MASUM IS HESITATING TO SIGN EXECUTION ORDERS OF CONVICTS SENTENCED DURING AL-MALIKI’S GOVERNMENT
June 9, 2015: Presidency spokesperson Khalid Shwani told BasNews that 667 execution orders were waiting to be carried out. “Most of them are pending from the previous government,” Shwani said.
President Fuad Masum has established a committee to investigate the orders as he wishes to apply justice and avoid sectarian or personal decisions of the former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
According to BasNews, President Masum has so far found no fault with the execution orders, but is hesitating to sign the final orders as the convicts were sentenced during al-Maliki’s government.
Kurdish Member of the Iraqi Parliament Zana Rustayi told BasNews that the Iraqi president must investigate the cases carefully. “Some of the decisions may have been taken as a result of sectarian conflicts between Shi’ite and Sunni Arabs.
