NIGERIA: NIGER STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ADOPTS DEATH PENALTY FOR ARMED CATTLE RUSTLERS
July 14, 2016: The Niger State House of Assembly passed into law the criminalization of kidnapping and cattle rustling, the law states that armed cattle rustlers face death sentence while kidnappers will be opened to life imprisonment.
While speaking on the law, the Speaker of the House, Honorable Ahmed Madafa said the law will discourage the menace of cattle rustling and kidnapping.
According to the bill, anybody caught with offensive weapon or accompanying anybody armed with dangerous weapons is liable to be sentenced to death.
Also, Anybody caught in this web shall forfeit his property.
In addition, whoever takes by force, cattle of others, have committed cattle rustling offences.
However, those who abetted kidnapping are to face 20 years imprisonment while anyone who arranges for self-kidnap will be sentenced to 14 years imprisonment, the law states. (Sources: theticktimes.com, 15/07/2016)
