BANGLADESH: TWO SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING SISTER
June 4, 2017: A Dhaka court sentenced two people to death for killing a woman in 2015. The convicts are Akbar Hossain, 45, a resident of Bangshal area, and Tofazzal Hossain Jewel, 38, of Gulshan area. The court also fined them Tk 5,000 each. Of them, Tofazzal was tried in absentia. During the verdict Akbar Hossain was produced before the court. According to the case details, Asma Akhter, 60, wife of Jahangir Alam, was strangulated to death by her brother Akbar Hossain on August 5, 2015 over sharing an amount of money. Victim’s son filed a case with the Bangshal police over the murder. Bangsal sub-inspector Rakibul Islam submitted charge-sheet against three people on October 29, 2015. Of them, Selim, Jahangir’s cousin, died during the trial proceedings. After examining the records and 12 witnesses, Dhaka’s special metropolitan session’s judge Mashiur Rahman Chowdhury handed down the verdict. (Sources: newagebd.net: 05/06/2017)
