BAHRAIN: HIGH COURT UPHOLDS DEATH PENALTY IN COP MURDER CASE

The High Court of Appeal upheld the death sentence in the bomb attack case in which policeman Mahmoud Farid was killed, a statement issued by Terror Crime Prosecution said.
The High Criminal Court sentenced the man on April 29, 2015 to death and handed life in jail to seven others in the case. It had also sentenced four others to ten years in prison, revoking the citizenship and confiscating the seized items.
The man sentenced to death faced charges of setting up a terrorist organisation in collaboration with others with the aim of targeting and killing policemen by using explosives.
On July 4, 2014, the accused placed, in collaboration with others, a homemade bomb in the parking place of an Interior Ministry’s armoured vehicle with the intention of killing the policemen in it. The terrorist act was carried out on Al-Eker Highway, close to the Applied Sciences University. When the armoured vehicle arrived at the scene and stopped, the convict blew it up at a signal by one of the convicts, killing the policeman. The convicts were referred to the High Criminal Court and an arrest warrant was issued to bring those at large to justice. The court heard the case and listened to the pleading of the defence and the Public Prosecution. It decided to impose maximum penalty on the convicts and issued its verdict that was upheld on March 7.
