OCTT ANNUAL REPORT 2017: 77 SENTENCED TO DEATH IN TUNISIA
April 4, 2018: During the presentation of the Annual Report by the Organization against Torture in Tunisia (OCTT), the Vice-President, Chokri Letaief, announced that there are 77 people sentenced to death in Tunisia. In a statement issued to Mosaïque FM, Letaief said that despite the improvement of their conditions, if compared to the pre-revolution period, particularly with regard to the possibility of receiving visits, their conditions are still critical. He also reiterated the request to abolish the death penalty. Although the country has observed a moratorium on executions since 1991, the death penalty remains a taboo subject in Tunisia. According to a recent survey conducted by the 3C Studies Institute, 70% of Tunisians are in favor of the death penalty. (Source: huffpostmaghreb.com, 04/04/2018)
