BANGLADESH: 12 GET DEATH PENALTY FOR MURDER IN KISHOREGANJ
October 21, 2019: A Dhaka tribunal on 21 October 2019 sentenced 12 people to death for killing a man in Kishoreganj in 2015. The condemned convicts are-Mahabubur Rahman Bhuiya, Mozamme lHaque Bhuiya, Afzal Bhuiya, Nayan Bhuiya, Bhulon Bhuiya, Ruhul Amin, Emdadul Haque, Shipon Mia, Sultana Akter, Delwar Hossain, Bidhan Sannashi and Nilufa Akter of Bajitpur upazila in Kishoreganj. Of them, Sultana, Selwar, Bidhan and Nilufa were tried in absentia. The tribunal also fined the convicts Tk 20,000 each. Besides, it sentenced two others-Tasnima Akter and Shamim alias Foysal bin Ruhul -to one year imprisonment each in the case. According to the prosecution, Mobarak Hossain Bhuiya, an assistant of a lawyer of Dhaka Session Judge Court, was killed by the convicts following enmity over the ownership of a piece of land in Bajitpur upazila of Kishoreganj on 22 October 2015. Later, victim's brother advocate Mozammel Hossain Bhuiya filed a case against 15 people with Bajitpur Police Station. Makbul Hossain Mollah, investigation officer of the case, submitted a chargehseet against 15 people on January 2, 2017. After examining the records and 31 witnesses, Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 Judge Manir Kamal handed down the verdict acquitting an accused in the case as allegation brought against him could not be proved.
