BANGLADESH: 7 GET DEATH FOR KILLING WOMAN AFTER RAPE IN JOYPURHAT
October 22, 2019: A Joypurhat tribunal on 22 October 2019 convicted seven people and sentenced them to death for killing a woman after raping in Akkelpur Upazila in 2016. The condemned convicts are Sohel Talukdar, Afzal Hossain, Rahin, Ferdous Ali, Mujibur Rahman, Ruhul Amin and Azizar Rahman of Akkelpur Upazila. The tribunal fined Sohel and Ferdous Tk 5 lakh each while the other convicts Tk 1 lakh each. According to the prosecution, the convicts picked up Aroti Rani, wife of Ujjal Mahant, a resident of a Deura shelter centre in the Upazila, and violated her in turns taking her to a remote place on 8 October 2016. Later, they fled the scene after leaving her in critical condition. She died on way to a local hospital. On 10 October 2016, the victim’s husband filed a case with Akkelpur Police Station. After examining the records and witnesses Joypurhat Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal judge Dr ABM Mahmudul Haque handed down the verdict. (Sources: UNB, 22/10/2019)
