BANGLADESH: 4 SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR ARMY SOLDIER MURDER
February 9, 2021: A Cumilla court on 8 February 2021 sentenced four people to death and another to ten years jail in a case filed over murder of an army soldier in 2016. Cumilla additional district and sessions judges court judge Rozina Khan delivered the verdict. The death penalty was awarded to convicts Sirajul Islam, Uzzal Mia, Joni Mia, Pradip Das. Another convict Ali Akkas who has been on the run, was sentenced to ten years jail. Lawyer Sheikh Masud Iqbal Majumdar stood for the state while lawyer Nayema Sultana represented the convicts. According to the case statement, the convicts hacked the victim Abdur Rahman, an army soldier, as he tried to resist the robbery on a Dhaka-bound running train in Chattogram on 21 October 2016. Later, the convicts confessed to their crimes before the court. The charge sheet against five people was submitted to the court on 11 July 2017 in the case. (Source: New Age, 09/02/2021)
