SAUDI ARABIA: SAUDI CITIZEN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING BANGLADESHI
March 30, 2021: A court in Saudi Arabia on 24 March 2021 sentenced Umar al-Shammeri, a Saudi Arabian citizen, to death for killing Bangladeshi immigrant Sagar Patwari in Dammam of the country 15 years ago. In June 2006, Saudi citizen Umar Al Shammeri had an altercation with Bangladeshi immigrant Sagar Patwari at a petrol pump on Abu Hadaria Road in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. At one point, Umar fired a pistol and Sagar was killed on the spot, reports BSS citing a press release issued by Saudi Arabian embassy in Dhaka. Umar fled the scene after the shooting. After a long investigation, local law enforcement body detained Umar al-Shammeri in 2018. Bangladesh embassy representatives have so far participated in 12 hearings in the Dammam Criminal Court seeking the death sentence for the accused on behalf of the heirs of the deceased, added the release. On 24 March the court sentenced the accused to death by beheading after the charges against him were proved. The deceased Sagar Patwari was the son of Haji Sona Miah of Nagirpar village in Barura upazila of Comilla district. (Source: Financial Express, 30/03/2021)
