BANGLADESH: 8 GET DEATH PENALTY FOR MURDER OF SOLDIER IN JHENAIDAH
December 15, 2021: A Khulna tribunal on 15 december 2021 sentenced eight people to death for the murder of a soldier in Jhenaidah. Judge Md Nazrul Islam Hawlader of the Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal also fined each convict Tk50,000. Those given the capital punishment are Hakimul Islam, Mizanur Rahman, Faruk Hossain, Matiar Rahman, Kashem, Abbas, Dalim and Moktar. Of them, Matiar, Dalim and Moktar are fugitives. Saiful Islam, 32, was hacked to death by a group of men on 18 August 2018. He was assigned to the Ghatail Cantonment Medical Corps in Tangail. Back then, his brother Monirul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: “My brother and I were returning from his [Saiful] in-laws’ house in Badarganj on a motorcycle around 10:30pm. “A group of robbers had placed a tree on the Haonghata road to block our way. We tried to escape but the robbers caught us and hacked my brother mercilessly.” Saiful was declared dead when taken to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital in critical condition. The victim’s father, Habibur Rahman, filed a case against five-six unnamed persons with Jhenaidah Sadar police station the next day. Then on 30 June 2019, Inspector Md Mohsin Hossain of Jhenaidah police station, the investigating officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against eight people to the court.
