BANGLADESH: 6 SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING SCHOOL TEACHER IN CUMILLA
May 7, 2023: A Cumilla court on May 2, 2023 sentenced six people to death in the case of the murder of college teacher Sujon in Barpara area of the city in 2010, besides, each was fined 10,000 taka. The verdict was issued by Judge Jahangir Hossain of Additional District and Sessions Court-5. Those sentenced to death are Jamal, Ilyas, Nayan, Kamal, Mithun, and Zakir Hossain. Among them, Ilias and Zakir Hossain were present at the court and the rest were tried in absentia. Of the total nine accused, two were acquitted and one died during the trial. On August 10, 2010, a college teacher in Cumilla’s Barpara area Jahidul Azam Sujon was stabbed to death with sharp weapons in a dispute over property. Sujan's father filed a case with Kotwali Model Police Station in Cumilla against 11 people the following day. After the testimony of fifteen witnesses, the court gave this verdict on May 2.
