MYANMAR: FIRST WOMAN EXECUTED SINCE JUNTA SEIZED POWER, RIGHTS GROUPS SAY
September 30, 2024: Myanmar’s military regime executed on September 23, 2024 two anti-coup activists, rights groups have said. Maung Kaung Htet and his wife Chan Myae Thu were executed at 4am Myanmar time (21:30 GMT) on September 23, the Women’s Peace Network said in a statement on September 23. Chan Myae Thu is the first woman to be executed since Myanmar's military overthrew the country's democratically-elected government in February 2021, according to a statement from the Women's Peace Network. The pair were convicted “without due process and a fair trial” over their alleged involvement in a parcel bomb attack on Yangon’s Insein Prison in October 2022, the rights group said.
