BANGLADESH: 5 SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MURDER IN KHULNA
October 29, 2024: A Bangladeshi court has handed down the death penalty to five men over the 2016 murder of Jahid Hossain in Khulna. Judge Md Jewel Rana delivered the verdict on October 28, 2024, according to state prosecutor Arifur Rahman Liton. The convicts are Md Abbas Ansari, Md Noshu Farazi, Md Riaz, Md Nadim, and Md Jabbar. In addition to the death penalty, each convict has been fined Tk 100,000. The judge also acquitted seven others due to insufficient evidence. The case dossier reveals that on the night of Dec 13, 2016, Jahid, the son of Sabbir Hossain from the Khalishpur Housing Estate area, went to Bongobashi Mor, where he was attacked and seriously injured by rivals due to a long-standing feud. Locals subsequently rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The next day, Jahid's younger brother, Md Sumon, filed a murder case at Khalishpur Police Station against 12 suspects and 4-5 unidentified individuals.
