BANGLADESH: ONE SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING WIFE IN PANCHAGARH
November 28, 2024: A Panchagarh court on November 26, 2024 sentenced a man to death for the brutal murder of his wife at Atwari upazila in the district. The verdict was delivered in the afternoon by Additional District and Sessions Judge SM Rezaul Bari. The convicted, Soleman Ali, 54, is a resident of South Sukhyati in the upazila, confirmed Public Prosecutor (PP) Adam Sufi. According to court and the case documents, Soleman Ali married Josna Begum nearly two decades ago, but their marriage was fraught with frequent disputes. Despite multiple attempts at reconciliation through arbitration, the conflicts persisted. On May 17, 2018, when no one else was at home, Soleman brutally beat Josna to death using a cricket bat. He then locked her body inside the house and fled. Following the murder, Josna's brother, Shahidul Islam, filed a case with Atwari Police Station, naming Soleman as the sole accused. After completing the investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the court on February 14, 2019. Evidence presented during the trial confirmed that Soleman had murdered Josna with the cricket bat. Based on the findings, the court handed down the death penalty. Soleman was present in the courtroom when the verdict was announced. (Source: Daily Observer, 26/11/2024)
